A Pint’s a Pound the World ‘Round

Except when it’s not.

It took me three days to realize that ordering a pint in Canada results in receiving an imperial pint. Not the paltry sixteen fluid ounces one might receive in the States. Nay, this is a man’s pint.

I think the fact that bars around here serve beer in their proper glassware threw me off for a while. All the different shapes (and tasty contents) distracted me.

What pub/bars were you drinking at?!

I routinely grumble at the inconsintancy when I order a ‘pint’ at various bars or pubs in Ontario and Montreal. At the better ones i might find an Imperial (568ml) pint, but most prefer to use American 473ml (they have no need to tell you how much the glass actually is and often don’t know!). In summer events, a ‘pint’ can be nothing but a standard 341ml bottle or 355ml can poured into a plastic cup!! AND with draught beer it is very common to under-fil the glass to an unexecptable level (not just by British standards either!) . A pint WAS legally 568ml/20 US ounces, but since switched to metric is no legal standard to what you get when you order a pint of beer. :-(
