Why does Perl need a Puppet or Chef equivalent? Is there functionality lacking in these systems that needs to be reinvented in Perl? Is it a desire to avoid the additional dependency chains of Python or Ruby? That's something I can understand for non-Linux systems.

What kind of bundled package software would attract newcomers?

Perl already have many modules but doesn't have bundled package software to attract the new comers.

I set up the domain with Google Apps for Your Domain, but at the moment it's still a temporary solution. I haven't figured out yet what I want my final solution to be.

<blockquote>I was able to get my e-mail flowing again by switching my domain’s MX record to use Google, so that wasn’t a problem.</blockquote>
Interesting... do you have to be using Google Apps For Your Domain to do that? Or were you able to just point your MX record to funnel email into your gmail address?

Wow, what a thought. Hopefully "diseases affecting less than .1% of the population" wouldn't be on that list of unnecessary expenses.

Of course, as long as private health insurance is still available at employer-subsidized rates that are at least similar to the current plans, I really don't care how universal health care turns out.

Their lowest tier is 1.5 mb up and .5 down. I have it and it is consistant. I finally wrangled an answer about the next level-$45/mo which was 5-9mb sustained down and 1mb up. This is not documented anywhere on their web sight nor did their online support have a clue-just kept quoting the 12mb burst speed which is good for 6 seconds I believe.

I will now send email to their tech support to aquire it in writing before switching.

So how's the Intel rep take to the mentioning of Snapdragon?

I remember reps coming to talk to us about when they finally caved and started making their x86_64 chips. You could almost see the mental strain it caused them to do everything they could to even acknowledge AMD in any way.

I had not heard of the beta PPM repository and I welcome any improvements in ActiveState's CPAN support.

Historically, though, these links reflect what I've seen of ActiveState's PPM:
http://ppm.activestate.com/BuildStatus/5.6-T.html
http://ppm.activestate.com/BuildStatus/5.8-T.html
I'm just singling out the T's because many of those Test:: modules happen to be important to me and I've had mixed results over the years getting the CPAN sources built on win32 via ActiveState Perl.

Adam also indicated in his talk that Vanilla and Strawberry Perl will help shorten the feedback cycle in order to get more attention on win32 specific issues in modules. And this is really what needs to happen rather than hoping Activestate will shoulder the entire burden of CPAN on win32.

Adam also indicated in his talk that Vanilla and Strawberry Perl will help shorten the feedback cycle in order to get more attention on win32 specific issues in modules. And this is really what needs to happen rather than hoping Activestate will shoulder the entire burden of CPAN on win32.

[...] Amazon was running what I found to be an interesting gimmick in their booth. “Ninja” code. It was just a bit of self-modifying Perl written out on some poster board. Tell them what it did and get entered into a raffle. It was actually a fairly clever way of advertising for talent to hire. Heck, it got me coming back to the booth a few times, if only to make fun of it. I did spot some potential improvements. [...]

So, if all of this supposedly works already, why aren't these people using ActivePerl instead of rolling their own Perl distributions. It's been my experience that people of the caliber of Adam Kennedy don't spend this much of their time on things like Strawberry Perl without good reason.

Why, if these things supposedly just work, do Adam and Ovid have such trouble getting things to just work?

Again, I don't use Windows and I don't use ActivePerl. I have been a Linux user for over ten years and feel very uncomfortable when using Windows, so I'm not the right person to say what's right or wrong with ActivePerl. However, both <a href="http://use.perl.org/~Alias/" rel="nofollow">Adam</a> and <a href="http://use.perl.org/~Ovid/" rel="nofollow">Ovid</a> have had quite a bit to say about the frustrations they've experienced with it.

I almost didn't approve the comment from Gisle Aas, because I really don't care about ActivePerl. I am not a Windows user, so ActivePerl really doesn't show up on my radar aside from the occasional user I need to support who uses it.

However, my strong belief in Free Speech led me to post it, even if I don't agree or care about it.

Regardless of how proactive ActiveState is at defending ActivePerl, the fact that Strawberry Perl and Camelbox even exist, along with some of the issues I've seen Ovid have with the build system, tells me that something actually is wrong with it. My understanding is that, when people have gone to ActiveState for support, they don't receive any. We're the Perl community, and we're good at getting things done.

Hi there, I'm Gisle and I work for ActiveState. I just wanted to
comment on the issues raised about ActivePerl in this post.

Claiming that PPI and other modules depending on List::MoreUtils do
not work in ActivePerl isn't accurate. What's true is that the free
repository ActiveState has provided for PPM packages built from CPAN
has not been able to provide a pre-built List::MoreUtils and therefore
not a pre-built PPI because of technical compatibility issues. Even
if our PPM repository did not provide these packages, you could easily
install them from other PPM repositories or use the CPAN shell the way
Strawberry Perl now supports. There is nothing in ActivePerl itself
that has made it unsuitable for running these modules.

ActivePerl has supported out-of-the-box module install from source via
the CPAN shell for users that had the free MinGW compiler installed
for almost 3 years now (since our 815 release).

I'm also glad to say that the problems with our PPM repository will
soon be history, and that you can already install PPI without problems
from our new PPM repositories, currently in beta at
. The beta repository currently
contain about 2000 additional Windows packages compared to the old
repository. The built system for the new repository is a complete
rewrite where we let the CPAN shell do most of the hard work, giving
us a system with much higher success rate and one that puts up
pre-built packages usually within a day after they have been published
to CPAN. We are quite exited about it and we hope our ActivePerl
users as well as the Strawberry Perl users will find it a useful
service.

@snipe

You're absolutely right, there's nothing wrong with profit. I failed to pass on what Nat actually had to say about the topic. Both because I was short on time, but because it wasn't the most interesting point being made.

It wasn't about not making a profit or that profits are evil. Instead, one should enter into this type of venture without the expectation of profit. He was doing it for the betterment of the children and that was the primary focus. Profit motives, in this case, would have gotten in the way.

Although, Nat is from New Zealand. As we know, those not from the United States are a bunch of communists who think profit is evil. He did make a comment, which I didn't completely catch, about for-profit corporations not always having the best interest of their customers in mind.

Don't profit? That doesn't seem fair. There's nothing wring with making an honest living - as long as it really is honest, and the product is genuine and positive. Profit isn't a dirty word.

Actually, security is always relative to a policy, an operational environment, and threats. If your policy ("expectations") are open for the environment, then it is what you expected.

Yeah, I know that isn't very precise, but we didn't want to go with the precise definition that involved state spaces and transitions and so on. :-)

My neighborhood consists mostly of new construction, so my suspicion is that Cox simply hasn't cared enough to do a proper job. I doubt that the condition is due to neighbors using bandwidth, though. Otherwise, I'd see much more inconsistent results.

We (my wife's coming this year) will be staying at the Red Lion. One of my co-workers is coming too, he'll be at the Red Lion as well. Al is going to be at the Doubletree.

I couldn't get in at the Doubletree because it's too expensive. Well, we could have stayed there, but it would have meant spending my per diem on it, which I'd rather not do.

Agreed. This is a great device for Netflix subscribers. It allows me to watch more obscure, lesser quality movies without burning one of my disc allotments. (e.g. I just watched a documentary on Philip K Dick that I'd have been reluctant to waste a disc on)

I certainly wouldn't be telling non-Netflix users to go out and buy one of these and subscribe to Netflix *strictly* for the current Instant Watch capability -- and library.

That looks really cool... it might even be worth restarting my Netflix subscription just to take advantage of it! Even the $9/month plan allows unlimited Instant Viewing, which (as you mention) would be a great replacement for cable when enough content is available this way.

GreenDimes here,

Thanks for signing up for our service. If you could wait 3 months to review only because we have to wait until the next circulation cycle before your name is removed.

Plenty does come in e-subscription form.

Thanks again

I routinely grumble at the inconsintancy when I order a 'pint' at various bars or pubs in Ontario and Montreal. At the better ones i might find an Imperial (568ml) pint, but most prefer to use American 473ml (they have no need to tell you how much the glass actually is and often don't know!). In summer events, a 'pint' can be nothing but a standard 341ml bottle or 355ml can poured into a plastic cup!! AND with draught beer it is very common to under-fil the glass to an unexecptable level (not just by British standards either!) . A pint WAS legally 568ml/20 US ounces, but since switched to metric is no legal standard to what you get when you order a pint of beer. :-(

I'd love to see a YAPC somewhere in the LA area. Something at Cal Tech in Pasadena would be perfect. :) Also, it shouldn't be too hard to find companies that will put up some money to be part of the YAPC job fair. :)

It's never too early to start thinking about it. Check out the bids from this year and start putting one together.

I discovered Perl in 1997, and luckily i discovered the Perl culture soon enough after that. Ever since, Larry's State of the Onion is like Super Bowl to me - one of the highest points of every year.

Usually O'Reilly publish a transcript of the speech with slides. I was trying to find a this years' transcript and couldn't find the official one. This blog post is the best summary i could find.

Do you have any idea whether they published a complete transcript or will ever publish it?

It's all about timing. SAGE-AU announces their dates a year in advance... information I find hard to get regarding OSCON even though my primary publisher is the conference organizer. So, I commit to appear at SAGE-AU, and *then* the dates for OSCON come out: the very same week. I've been here in Australia while OSCON happens in my home city. Oh, the irony.

A lot of the things spec'd haven't been implemented yet, but it's a good way to get a feel for it.

Indeed.<br/><br/>I meant to say a little something along those lines in my original post, but forgot. I like to think I've learned quite a bit over the last few years. The important thing is that I've gotten where I am now, not how perfect I managed to make the journey. Who knows? Maybe I'm better off for it.

Wow. JavaOne had a lot more fun and games than ApacheCon. Maybe that's the difference between a conference held by a company bribing people to use its flagship product and a conference held by enthusiasts of a collection of Open Source projects.

Blogging during the conference. I should have thought about that when I was at JavaOne. Probably the only time I would have had anything interesting to say. Although I was too busy living it up in the bean bag pit watching movies like LOTR and Office Space or getting a massage :). I gotta say JavaOne does know how to entertain when you're not in the sessions. They actually had some people from the Apache project at JavaOne. Of course, talking about their Java projects.

I am not really concerned with the hosting companies. PHP will always be king. Only individuals or very small businesses (or businesses who can't leverage the Web) will be using them. Those using them will be using a robust open source CMS package like Mambo. At least, they should be; why spend resources developing a completely custom application and then skimp on the hosting? Any business taking the Web seriously will be running their own servers. These are businesses with development shops (large or small) and IT budgets (again, large or small). There is the case of a small business outsourcing its development work to another company, but these observations then apply to the company doing the development work.<br/><br/>I don't think there is any real comparison between Perl and Java. When it comes to application frameworks, Java has blown everything else out of the water. PHP, Ruby, Perl, nothing holds a candle to Java. I see the Java community developing a consensus on what are and what are not best practices. This is good for large organizations that want both commodity tools and, unfortunately, commodity coders.<br/><br/>However, Java is big. Very big. It's not the kind of thing found on cheap hosting providers. Businesses wanting to deploy Java solutions have to spend good money on the infrastructure even if the software costs nothing. That's not a big deal for large companies, hardware is relatively cheap these days.<br/><br/>Perl has a few things going for it. Maypole and Catalyst are good Web frameworks; Catalyst, in particular, has garnered quite a bit of <a HREF="http://www.mightyv.com/" REL="nofollow">excitement recently</a>. In general, though, Perl developers tend to <i>prefer</i> rolling their own frameworks. They take a kind of perverse pleasure in the challenges of building the architecture from scratch and all the nitty gritty details that entails. They don't want the details to be abstracted away. This leads to programmers (and I've met some) who insist on reinventing the wheel at every turn. When it comes down to it, I think this is why there's nothing exciting in the Perl world for the Web. When everyone is busy building foundations, no one is building the house.<br/><br/>I think this distinction between Java and Perl programmers—between users of compiled and interpreted languages (or typed and untyped, if you will)—was well presented by Paul Graham in his <a HREF="http://www.paulgraham.com/gh.html" REL="nofollow">Great Hackers</a> essay. Well worth a read.<br/><br/>I've been very impressed with the Java frameworks, particularly the projects coming out of the Apache Software Foundation. However, I think the only people having any real fun are those who are developing the frameworks. They're the ones creating new and exciting things, and shaping the future of the Web. The programmers using these frameworks are merely connecting one component to another in order to ship a product. Programmers have been (or soon will be) reduced to what is essentially an assembly line worker.<br/><br/>I've come all this way and I don't think I've even answered the initial question. Yes, Perl requires much customization. However, while on a lower level than the Java frameworks, there are countless modules on the CPAN that avoid the reinvention of round things that assist in the motion of non-round things. Things aren't as... pretty... as in the Java world, but a programmer can do a lot with amazingly little code.

PHP, Ruby, Perl, nothing holds a candle to Java. I see the Java community developing a consensus on what are and what are not best practices. This is good for large organizations that want both commodity tools and, unfortunately, commodity coders.

However, Java is big. Very big. It’s not the kind of thing found on cheap hosting providers. Businesses wanting to deploy Java solutions have to spend good money on the infrastructure even if the software costs nothing. That’s not a big deal for large companies, hardware is relatively cheap these days.

Perl has a few things going for it. Maypole and Catalyst are good Web frameworks; Catalyst, in particular, has garnered quite a bit of excitement recently. In general, though, Perl developers tend to prefer rolling their own frameworks. They take a kind of perverse pleasure in the challenges of building the architecture from scratch and all the nitty gritty details that entails. They don’t want the details to be abstracted away. This leads to programmers (and I’ve met some) who insist on reinventing the wheel at every turn. When it comes down to it, I think this is why there’s nothing exciting in the Perl world for the Web. When everyone is busy building foundations, no one is building the house.

I think this distinction between Java and Perl programmers—between users of compiled and interpreted languages (or typed and untyped, if you will)—was well presented by Paul Graham in his Great Hackers essay. Well worth a read.

I’ve been very impressed with the Java frameworks, particularly the projects coming out of the Apache Software Foundation. However, I think the only people having any real fun are those who are developing the frameworks. They’re the ones creating new and exciting things, and shaping the future of the Web. The programmers using these frameworks are merely connecting one component to another in order to ship a product. Programmers have been (or soon will be) reduced to what is essentially an assembly line worker.

I’ve come all this way and I don’t think I’ve even answered the initial question. Yes, Perl requires much customization. However, while on a lower level than the Java frameworks, there are countless modules on the CPAN that avoid the reinvention of round things that assist in the motion of non-round things. Things aren’t as… pretty… as in the Java world, but a programmer can do a lot with amazingly little code.

I suspect that as Ruby on Rails becomes more popular you won't see an explosion of websites using it until more hosting companies support it. Many small businesses look to the cheap hosting sites, $15/month, $9.95/month ... And currently those hosting sites most often only support Perl and PHP (It will cost you a lot more for Java support). It's my guess that since Ruby is also a scripting language that people seem to say is the next best thing since PHP that eventually these hosting services will include Ruby on Rails. <br/><br/>Tell us more about Perl in comparison to Java. Like in our company, you used to have to create your own custom framework for Java. But I see a lot of advantages in Java now with all the newer projects that have come out in more recent years like Spring, Hibernate, and JFaces which make it easier and easier to create complicated projects. Does Perl still require a lot of customization for each company that wishes to use it to write large scale projects? I know very little about Perl.
